The Isle of Raasay, a tiny, beautiful island off the west coast of Scotland, is making whisky history: since 2017, single malt has been legally distilled here for the first time. The Isle of Raasay Distillery is the heart of the island community. More than ten percent of the approximately 160 inhabitants lend a hand in whisky production and the reintroduction of barley cultivation.

Their Isle of Raasay single malt is inspired by historic Hebridean malts. Blended from peated and unpeated raw spirits, it is matured in a cask combination that is new for Scotland – including Bordeaux Red Wine Casks.

With a single one of these wine casks, the whisky druid once again proves his knack for casks. Cask number 18/13 was filled with peated distillate from the Isle of Raasay Distillery around five years ago and matured on the coast of the Hebridean island. In May 2017, Bill Dobbie and Alasdair Day brought barley growing back to Raasay after more than 40 years. Since then, the old Icelandic barley varieties Bere and Iskria have flourished here. This was not yet enough as a basis for the distillery’s pioneer malt. Malt from Scottish barley, still kilned over Highland peat (local peat is already being planned for further bottlings), forms the basis for the Isle of Raasay Single Malt Inaugural Release 2020. Slightly smoky, with rich aromas of dark fruits and in a natural, strong reddish brown, the Scotch sensually introduces the distilling style of the Raasay Distillery – and creates anticipation for the Core Range expected in May 2021. Other special features of the whisky: the Raasay water filtered through volcanic sedimentary rock and the unusually long fermentation of 96 to 110 hours. This maintains the high mineral content of the water and thus ensures the characteristic berry-fruity taste even before any barrel contact.
