SPEYSIDE
The Speyside region as part of the Highlands is the “heart of Scottish whisky production”. Named after the river of the same name, the River Spey, which is also one of the most famous salmon rivers in the world, Speyside has the highest concentration of malt whisky distilleries. There are more than 30 distilleries within a radius of about 20 kilometers. In the center of this region lies the small town of Dufftown with around 3,000 inhabitants, which is also known as the secret “whisky capital of the world”. However, the sentence “Rome was built on seven hills – Dufftown stands on seven stills” was only valid until the eighth distillery was built in Dufftown.
