RARITIES

There are many factors that can make a whisky a sought-after rarity. These are often older distilleries, original bottlings from renowned or closed distilleries, if possible in the original cask strength and not filtered or colored, which were bottled many years ago. Since whiskey does not mature further in the bottle, but does not lose quality and taste when stored properly (upright, as dark as possible in the packaging, constant temperature), it can be stored practically indefinitely. Therefore, whisky is very suitable as a collector’s item and, if necessary, as an investment with growth potential and low risk of loss.

In the “worst case” you can still drink your collection items. In recent years in particular, some whiskeys have seen an enormous increase in value among collectors. If you are interested in an “investment in whiskeys”, we would be happy to advise you on this subject without obligation. In addition to the original bottlings from the distilleries, there are other rarities from independent bottlers, in particular the so-called single cask bottlings, i.e. the contents of a single cask, with the basic aromas of the respective distillery, but also with the individual taste nuances of the respective cask. Especially with the single casks, the end of the availability of a whisky is inevitable.

Since a whisky cask can only hold a certain amount of whisky depending on its size and the amount of whiskey decreases the longer it matures in the cask due to evaporation (the so-called angels share), it is not uncommon for single cask bottlings to contain there are only a few hundred bottles, and even fewer for very old whiskys. We also consider some of the still very young whiskeys from the distilleries that have been producing in recent years to be well suited for a collection. Even if these young whiskeys do not yet have the depth and richness of aroma of older whiskeys, it can be very exciting to compare them in a few years’ time with a 10 or 12 year old whiskey from the respective distillery. If you have decided to build up a whiskey collection, we recommend that you regularly check the “treasures”, as even closed bottles can lose their fill level over the years. In addition, great caution is required when opening older bottles in order not to damage the cork. You can find some of these rare, limited or hard-to-find whiskys and those that were bottled a long time ago in our “Rarities” section. If you are looking for a specific rarity, please contact us.
