What are four engineers, a teacher, a cook, a butcher, a pilot and a doctor? The founding team of the Danish Stauning distillery! In 2005 the friends decided to put a vision into practice: single malt based on the model of peaty whisky from the island of Islay. Despite little whisky experience, it was quickly followed by great praise: “If you continue like this, it could become one of the best smoky whiskys in the world,” said whisky legend Jim Murray when he tried the New Make in 2006.
The distillers from Ringkøbing Fjord put Danish whisky on the map and wrote a success story with it. Single malt, malted rye whisky and Co. from Stauning are based exclusively on high-quality ingredients from the region and a variety of different barrels. Even the standard range of the Danes is therefore very diverse. Stauning brings even more variety into play with single cask bottlings.

The Stauning “Bastard” belongs to the Research Series like the “Curious”. In this bottling series, the team can really let off steam and sometimes think outside the box. So also with the Stauning Bastard, where Denmark meets Mexico.
At Stauning, they quickly discovered that rye whisky in particular absorbs aromas from casks very well – and very quickly. Experimenting with different casks is always exciting and the results are often surprisingly good!
What exactly is Stauning Bastard? The basis is the Rye New Make (70% malted rye, 30% malted barley), which matures for three years in heavily toasted Virgin Oak casks. Then the whisky is poured into five wonderful Oro de Oaxaca Mexcal casks – and the Stauning Bastard is ready just 6 months later. Rye whisky like you’ve never tried it before!
