The Islay distillery Bruichladdich, whose name means “beach,” was built in 1881 by the Harley brothers. After a period of closure, it was announced on December 20, 2000, that it would soon be back in operation. The first new make spirit flowed from the stills in May 2001. Bruichladdich’s success is closely linked to the work of one of the most important figures in the Scottish whisky scene – Jim McEwan. In 2012, the distillery changed hands again for £58 million. The current owner is Rémy Cointreau.
