Glencadam demonstrates the complex influence of butts, barrels and barriques – all of which are pre-aged with (liqueur) wines – in a new wood finish series consisting of five neither chill-filtered nor coloured single malts at ideal drinking strength.

The Glencadam Reserva PX received a finish in former Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. Finishing in sweet Pedro Ximénez sherry butts makes the Glencadam lush, with syrupy and dark fruit notes, chocolate and spices.

Glencadam, which translates as “Valley of the Wild Goose”, was commissioned in Brechin in 1825. Most of the production is used for the Ballantines brand. After 180 years in the whisky waiting loop, Glencadam took the step out of the shadow of the blend industry onto the stage of the original bottlers. But rather quietly. Their “East Highlands” single malt made from unpeated barley malt is still considered an insider tip today.
The whiskies, which are up to 30 years old and neither coloured nor chill-filtered, are produced in two original copper pot stills, just as they were in the founding days of the small distillery. Due to their construction, these produce a particularly delicate and soft spirit. This is because the Lyne arms run at an angle of 15 degrees upwards, not downwards.
