The Black Bull Blends have a higher malt content than most standard blends, and there is no cooling filtration so that each individual whiskey contained can develop its full character. Black Bull was also the first 100-proof blend; In addition to the lack of cooling filtration, the increased alcohol volume is another factor for the intense taste of this blend and therefore also for its popularity among whiskey connoisseurs all over the world.

Black Bull was first produced as a blend by the Dundee-based blenders George Willsher & Company in the 1860s and came to prominence after the repeal of prohibition in the U.S. in the 1930s.

By the end of the 1980s Black Bull had become a very well known name in the US. It has also been sold in a number of countries throughout Europe with Italy being the most prominent.

George Willsher and Company was acquired by John Gross and Company in the late 1980s and subsequently acquired by Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky Limited during the 1990s.

Today, the brand is sold worldwide and has been decorated with many prestigious awards, including Gold Medals from the International Spirits Challenge and Best Scotch Blended Whisky Awards by World Whisky Award.
