Laphroaig means as much as ‘valley at the big white bay’ and was founded by Donald and Alex Johnston in 1826. It is located at the southern shore of Islay. The whisky is famous for its smokey-phenolic, iodine-containing and salty character. Laphroaig has its own peat fields – which can be reached by the shortest railway of the world – and also has own malting floors.

The second bottling from Laphroaig’s Elements series was allowed to ferment for 115 hours, i.e. almost 5 days. This long fermentation time ensures that significantly more fruit flavours than usual emerge and the smoke recedes a little into the background. For this reason, it was also decided to mature the spirit in bourbon casks in order to emphasise the lighter character of the distillate.
