Until July 31 1970, it was normal for every seafarer in the British Navy to get a daily ration of rum. On ththis day this ritual ended so this day is known as Black Tot day. The history of Black Tot rum started 11 years ago when bottles of traditional Navy rum were discovered in an English marina. The bottles contained rums from Jamaica, Guyana and Barbados, which therefore have not been touched for more than 40 years. In 2011 these bottles of the historic rum were rebottled and launched on the market as “Black Tot The Last Consigment”. The new rum – simply “Black Tot” – pays homage to the moment that changed everything. However, the Black Tot is a creation for modern rum connoisseurs! The traditional Caribbean style was used to create a recipe that contains the natural fruit flavors of Barbados, added depth through the full-bodied Guyana rums and intertwined with the vibrancy of the Jamaican rums. The new Black Tot is a complex rum that knows how to stand out from other rums. An enjoyable, repeatable taste experience – a rum you will never forget!

Since 2021, the premium brand Black Tot from Elixir Distillers has been celebrating the end of a legendary era: Black Tot Day. In honour of the former rum rations in the British Navy, which were issued for the last time on 31 July 1970, Master Blender Oliver Chilton creates an exquisite Master Blender’s Reserve every year.
The Master Blender’s Reserve 2025 revisits the characteristic flavours of the 50th Anniversary Edition, creating a stronger, more traditional rum style.
Rum from Guyana provides luscious notes of liquorice and dark chocolate, balanced by overripe banana notes from the Jamaican portion. A blend of older, up to 18-year-old and younger rums from Barbados lends additional complexity with grapefruit and buttery notes.
A rare cask from the closed Caroni distillery in Trinidad, last year’s Master Blender’s Reserve and a touch of the original Royal Navy blend, which has been blended continuously since the early 19th century, complete this dense and robust rum.
