Laphroaig means as much as ‘valley at the big white bay’ and was founded by Donald and Alex Johnston in 1826. It is located at the southern shore of Islay. The whisky is famous for its smokey-phenolic, iodine-containing and salty character. Laphroaig has its own peat fields – which can be reached by the shortest railway of the world – and also has own malting floors.

This bottling is the first bottling of the new Elements series from Laphroaig.
Typically Laphroaig uses two 5.5 ton mash tuns that provide 11 tons of wort for the washback. For this bottling, the team remembered the time before the 1990s, when it was common to use a single 8.5 tonne mash tun. The team used this in addition to the two 5.5 tonne mash tuns to create a whiskey that is the result of the meeting of old and new. The wort drawn from the vats into the washbacks is typically semi-cloudy, giving this Laphroaig its combination of fruity and smoky flavors. Cloudy wort was also used for Elements 1.0, giving bigger and heavier flavors and highlighting the phenolic notes.
