The ripening cellar of the Grosperrin house is filled with the sound of a bronze bell every day. With a perfect F, the small team of the family-run company celebrates the treasures it keeps in the cellar on the banks of the Charente: extraordinary, sometimes very old and limited cognacs from all the Crus, the growing areas of the Cognac region. Founder Jean Grosperrin could not have foreseen that the family would be known today for this unique collection. Once a shepherd and sheep shearer, he learned the art of distillation in the 1980s before setting up as a barrel broker in the Cognac region.
When he began to fill the first barrels independently in 1999, Jean Grosperrin had got to know all facets of the cognac industry from producer to supplier – and gathered knowledge of rare, extremely valuable cognacs that slumbered in the cellars of the Charente province. Nearly 4,300 domains, some of them very small, make up the rich and infinitely diverse tissue of the Cognac region. Mostly in family hands for generations, the producers have very old barrels, some of them from family estates. Through his numerous contacts, Jean Grosperrin made these cognacs accessible to connoisseurs.
