As a sailor in the Royal Navy, you had a choice: either rum or the equivalent in cash – until 31 July 1970. On the so-called “Black Tot Day”, the last rum ration, the “tot”, was handed out. No reason for rum lovers to mourn: The Black Tot Rum brand of Elixir Distillers will celebrate the anniversary again in 2022 – albeit delayed due to external circumstances – with an exceptional bottling.

The goal for the Black Tot Master Blender’s Reserve 2023: greater proximity to the original Navy Blend, with a more intense mouthfeel and rich notes of wood smoke, espresso and cocoa.

For this, Chilton combined part of the Master Blender’s Reserve from the previous year, which as always consists partly of the original Navy Rum, with up to 31-year-old (Wooden) Pot and Column Still Rums from five different countries: Guyana (31.5%), Barbados (18.3%), Jamaica (9%), Trinidad (19%) and Grenada (2.7%)

Until July 31 1970, it was normal for every seafarer in the British Navy to get a daily ration of rum. On ththis day this ritual ended so this day is known as Black Tot day. The history of Black Tot rum started 11 years ago when bottles of traditional Navy rum were discovered in an English marina. The bottles contained rums from Jamaica, Guyana and Barbados, which therefore have not been touched for more than 40 years. In 2011 these bottles of the historic rum were rebottled and launched on the market as “Black Tot The Last Consigment”. The new rum – simply “Black Tot” – pays homage to the moment that changed everything. However, the Black Tot is a creation for modern rum connoisseurs! The traditional Caribbean style was used to create a recipe that contains the natural fruit flavors of Barbados, added depth through the full-bodied Guyana rums and intertwined with the vibrancy of the Jamaican rums. The new Black Tot is a complex rum that knows how to stand out from other rums. An enjoyable, repeatable taste experience – a rum you will never forget!
