The name of the Ardbeg distillery means “little hill”. It is located on the south coast of the whisky island of Islay on the way from the harbour town of Port Ellen to Kildalton. The site of the current distillery was already popular with moonshiners. After a very eventful history with intermittent closures, Ardbeg was taken over by Glenmorangie PLC in 1997, which in turn was then bought by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy in 2004, and is now one of Scotland’s most famous distilleries, known for its smoky, peaty and salty bottlings with strong phenolic tones. The distillery’s water comes from Loch Arinambeast and Loch Uigeadail, after which 2 bottlings are also named. In 2015, Ardbeg’s 200th birthday was celebrated.
