The Bunnahabhain Distillery is located on the Sound of Islay, in the northeastern corner of the island, directly across from the island of Jura—so remote that when it was built in 1881, a long, winding road first had to be constructed down to the sea. The water used to make whiskey—which is relatively low in peat for Islay—comes from an underground spring, the Margadale River. Until 2003, it was owned by the descendants of the founders, Highland Distillers. The current owner is Burn Stewart Distillers.

The Bunnahabhain Distillery on Islay is known for its unpeated malts, which are distilled from malted barley. This 2018 vintage was aged in a single sherry cask that had been used for aging before—a refill sherry hogshead that imparts a gentle sherry note to the whiskey without overpowering it. In 2025, it was selected by Stuart Urquhart for Gordon & MacPhail’s “Spirit of Scotland” series and bottled at a natural cask strength of 60.7% vol. Neither cold filtration nor color additives were used, so the color in the glass comes exclusively from the aging process.
