Unique casks, personally and locally selected in Scotland’s whisky regions, always cask strength, never chill-filtered or coloured. Sounds magical? No wonder, because these Best Drams are the work of Michel Reick, who as a whisky druid makes the magic of handpicked casks accessible to connoisseurs. Five newcomers make magical moments of enjoyment possible this week.
The new Best Drams have had between 6 and 15 years to develop their exquisite aromas. The single cask fillings open up exciting perspectives for whisky fans on distilleries from the Isle of Islay, from Speyside and the Highlands – in combination with the classic bourbon barrel or aromatic (sweet) wine casks.
The Ben Nevis 2012/2022, for example, was matured in red wine barrels. The oak endows the Highlander from the distillery at the foot of the mountain of the same name with lush fruit notes and a creamy sweetness.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Very fruity with strawberry, rhubarb and bacon cherry. Cane sugar and oatmeal bump up against a backdrop of crème brûlée, fading to a hint of lime zest at the end. A delightfully musty, dirty note forms the framework.
Palate: Soft, oily and sweeter, but much less fruity than on the nose. More intense cane sugar with bacon cherry, plum, blueberry muffin and crème brûlée. The dirty note only becomes noticeable at the very end.
Finish: Creamy, warming and dirty. Becoming sweeter towards the end with berry notes.
