Secrets of Islay 2017 Old Friends - 56,1%

Product information "Secrets of Islay 2017 Old Friends - 56,1%"

Behind this blended malt is the independent bottler The Old Friends, valued for its selection of characterful single casks. Distilled in October 2017, this whisky spent its entire eight-year maturation in a 1st Fill St. Estèphe wine barrique. This cask from one of the most renowned appellations of Bordeaux gives the Islay spirit a special depth. The limited release of just 326 bottles, non-chill-filtered and with no added colouring, underlines its uncompromising focus on unadulterated craftsmanship.

Reminiscent of warm honey in colour, the bouquet immediately reveals an intense combination of robust peat smoke and ripe plums. On the palate, a powerful mouthfeel unfolds, with juicy dark berries meeting the dry spice of oak. The high strength of 56.1% vol. carries the aromas with precision and leads into a long-lasting finish marked by lingering smoke and a fine, vinous structure.

This whisky is an invitation to connoisseurs who appreciate the tension between extreme smokiness and fruity complexity. The lovingly designed label featuring Hansel and Gretel is a metaphorical hint at the journey of flavour you embark on with this single cask. We recommend enjoying it neat or with a few drops of water to fully explore the many-layered nuances of the St. Estèphe wine cask.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Pronounced peat smoke combines harmoniously with dense notes of ripe plums and the fine vinosity of the red wine cask.

Palate: On the palate, an intense interplay of distinctive smoke and the spicy structure of oak unfolds, underpinned by dark fruit nuances.

Finish: The finish is long-lasting and dry, marked by elegant wood spice and a final smoky accent.

Bunnahabhain 12-Year-Old Thompson Bros. Madeira - 46.1%

The Bunnahabhain Distillery is located on the Sound of Islay, in the northeastern corner of the island, directly across from the island of Jura—so remote that when it was built in 1881, a long, winding road first had to be constructed down to the sea. The water used to make whiskey—which is relatively low in peat for Islay—comes from an underground spring, the Margadale River. Until 2003, it was owned by the descendants of the founders, Highland Distillers. The current owner is Burn Stewart Distillers.
