The Bunnahabhain distillery lies on the Sound of Islay at the north-eastern corner of the island, directly opposite the Isle of Jura. It is so remote that when it was built in 1881, a long and winding road down to the sea had to be built first. The water used for making the whisky, which is relatively low in peat for Islay, comes from an underground spring, the Margadale River. Until 2003 the distillery was owned by the descendants of its founders, Highland Distillers. The current owner is Burn Stewart Distillers.
