Lowlands
What tends to be the lightest and freshest single malt whiskey in Scotland is produced in the Lowlands. A handful of distilleries lie south of the imaginary line between Glasgow and Edinburgh, where the hills are flatter and nature is more gentle. In addition to the established distilleries such as Glenkinchie, Auchentoshan and Bladnoch, a number of distilleries have been added in recent years. The younger distilleries in the region include Kingsbarns, Annandale and the Glasgow Distillery.
As early as 1770, there was a distillery—called Dundashill—at the site where the Glasgow Distillery stands today; it was one of the first licensed whiskey distilleries at the time. In 2014, Liam Hughes, Mike Hayward, and Ian McDougall decided to revive this piece of history and, as a result, founded the Glasgow Distillery. Today, it is one of the few urban distilleries in Scotland dedicated to whiskey production. With their four pot stills, they currently produce around 440,000 liters of alcohol per year.

One of the older Glasgow whiskies, a nine-year-old Palo Cortado single cask, steps up in honour of Kirsch's 50th anniversary: The Glasgow 1770 – 2017/2026 pays tribute to Kirsch Import with a rich, fruit-forward profile of crisp apples, orange zest and sweet hedge cherries, along with walnut and espresso. To achieve this, the single malt, old by the distillery's standards, was given a second maturation of more than six years in a sherry cask previously seasoned with Palo Cortado.

Unusual for the Lowlands, the Glasgow Distillery burns, among other things, single malt from peat malt. For the exclusive bottling, it spent its final maturation period in a barrel pre-loaded with Moscatel. The sweet wine is made from the sherry grape of the same name and develops a high sugar content. The result at a strong 60.1% vol. Cask Strength: sweet smoke, floral notes, tobacco, citrus and spices.
