Arran
Arran distillery lies at the north-western tip of the island of the same name, between the west coast of Scotland and the Kintyre peninsula, and is easy to reach by car and ferry from Glasgow. It went into operation in 1995 after a delay, because a pair of golden eagles was nesting exactly where the distillery was to be built. It was built by Harold Currie, who fulfilled a dream after many successful years in the whisky industry, where he rose to become a director of Chivas.
Arran has an extensive core range in its portfolio as well as various bottlings with different wine finishes. As Arran's capacity was quickly exhausted, the decision was made to build a second distillery on the Isle of Arran. This is the Lagg Distillery, which had already existed on Arran more than 150 years ago. To tell them apart more easily, the Arran distillery was renamed Lochranza in 2020. In future, Arran (Lochranza) is to concentrate on producing unpeated whiskies, while the peated counterpart will come from the Lagg distillery at the other end of the island.
Arran (Lochranza) itself has two relatively small wash stills and two spirit stills and produces just under 1,200,000 litres of alcohol a year. The spirit often brings exotic aromas & a lot of complexity. Citrus aromas in harmony with oak and a little spice are very typical of Arran.
The Arran 10 Years Arran Barley (2026) combines regional origin with fruity freshness and fine spice. Made from Concerto barley from Bellevue Farm on the Isle of Arran and matured for ten years in first fill bourbon barrels, this limited single malt shows citrus notes, vanilla and ginger biscuits. Bottled at 50 % vol., with no added colouring and non-chill-filtered.
