Since its founding, the Saburomaru Distillery in Tonami, Toyama, has been dedicated exclusively to the craft of producing smoky whiskies. The Saburomaru V The Hierophant is the fifth installment in the single-malt series launched in 2017, which is characterized by a distinctive tarot motif. Each release evolves—this one through a special experiment: matured ale yeast, carefully cultivated and combined with fresh whiskey yeast. The result is a complex aromatic profile that goes far beyond classic peaty notes. In the glass, it displays a luminous golden amber hue. The clear bottle fully reveals its color. The cream-colored label, featuring a delicate illustration of the Hierophant, and the elaborate, dark-marbled gift box with a viewing window make this whiskey a special collector’s item, even visually.
The Hierophant is not chill-filtered and contains no colorants—at 48% vol., it’s poured straight into the glass. On the nose, it opens with bright fruits like apple and pear, accompanied by honeyed sweetness, floral notes, and a hint of pepper. On the palate, dense smoke unfolds alongside roasted chestnuts, maple syrup, and salty herbal spice. The finish remains persistently smoky, with hints of ash and a subtle sweetness. Try it neat or with a small sip of still water to fully discover its complexity.
