Laphroaig
Laphroaig, "the hollow by the broad bay", was put into operation in 1826 on the south coast of Islay by Donald and Alex Johnston. It is known for its smoky, phenolic, iodine-rich and salty whisky, which sparks many debates. Laphroaig has its own peat fields (served by the shortest railway line in the world) and its own floor maltings.
For producing Laphroaig there is used malted barley. The smoke of this peat that only exists on Islay gives the whisky its unique flavour.
