The history of the Drambuie is closely linked to the Scottish struggle for freedom against the English. According to legend, Prince Charles Edward III. Stuart, better known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie" and contender for the Scottish throne, was the royal liqueur's secret recipe in thanks for saving him after a lost battle to a fellow combatant named Mackinnon.
