The Balvenie 14 Year Old Week of Peat contains whisky that is only produced for one week a year. When the distillery is closed for cleaning and maintenance, heavily peated barley malt is distilled beforehand. The first and second run is stored in additional tanks and reused the following year, so each vintage is linked together. The peat content in the malt is around 30 ppm.

The name Balvenie is infered by the castle Balvenie which is located close by and means as much as 'city of luck'. It is one of many distilleries of the village Dufftown, the secret 'capital of whisky' in the Speyside and is also named as 'little sister' of Glenfiddich. The distillery was built in 1892 nearly by one's own hands by William Grant & Sons out of the ruins of the guesthouse. Today the distillery owns more than eight stills and since 1990 there is another distillery on the compound named Kininvie. The water that is used has its origin in the spring Robbie Dubh, the same spring Glenfiddich uses its water from.

The Balvenie 12 Years Home Malted is a tribute to the oldest bottling the distillery has ever released, created by Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie. The whisky first matured in American oak and was then finished in former European oak sherry casks. The barley used comes entirely from the distillery's own maltings, one of the few in Scotland that still malts its own barley.
