The distillery was founded in 1845 by John Begg. It is located in the Higlands in Crathie near the River Dee. In 1848 it started delivering whisky to the palace Balmoral of Queen Victoria. Since then it was allowed to call itsself 'Royal'. The Single Malt, having a finishing in an 'Fine Old Muscat Wood' nowadays belongs to the Classic Malts of Scotland. Today the distillery is owned by Diageo.
