Behind this bottling lies the keen intuition of the Thompson Bros., who selected a peated single malt from a mysterious Highland distillery for this release. Following an initial maturation period of over twelve years, the whisky underwent an exceptionally long finishing process: the spirit spent a full three years in ex-rum casks, marrying smoky notes with tropical complexity. With a limited worldwide run of just 895 bottles, this malt underscores its exclusive character—one that remains unadulterated thanks to the absence of chill-filtration and artificial coloring.

Shimmering in a bright, pale gold, the whisky reveals a fascinating complexity right from the nose. A distinct note of peat smoke harmoniously blends with the sweetness of vanilla and ripe, exotic fruits, accompanied by a hint of caramel and spicy wood. The Thompson brothers from Dornoch are renowned in the industry for their keen eye for exceptional casks. For this limited edition, they selected a peated single malt from an undisclosed Highland distillery. The spirit spent 18 years maturing in Oloroso hogsheads sourced directly from Jerez. This maturation in the slightly smaller hogsheads facilitated an intense interaction between the wood and the smoky spirit, resulting in a complex character that has been bottled at natural color and without chill-filtration.

In the glass, the whisky presents a deep, inviting mahogany hue that hints at the intensity of the sherry influence. On the nose, a bouquet of dried dates, raisins, and candied orange peel unfolds, subtly underscored by dark chocolate and a pinch of cinnamon. Distilled on June 21, 2007, this Highland malt matured for over 19 years in selected refill hogsheads, allowing the spirit to retain its original distillery character without being overpowered by overly active wood. Ardbeg 19 years “Traigh Bhan” Batch 7 – 50,3%

The name Ardbeg means as much as ‘little hill’. It is located at the southern coast of the whisky island Islay between Port Ellen and Kildalton. The location already has been popular for illegal distilleries. After a history with ups and downs including temporary close-downs the distillery was inherited by Glenmorangie PLC in 1997, which were themselves bought by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy in 2004. Today it is one of the most famous distilleries in Scotland, known for its smokey, peaty and salty bottlings with strong note of phenol. Two bottlings are named like the lakes the water of the distillery comes from: Loch Arinambeast and Loch Uigeadail. In 2015 Ardbeg celebrated its bicentenary.

In the historic surroundings of Port Ellen, this rum is produced at the ‘Old Lemonade Factory’ under the supervision of Distillery Manager Ben Inglis. The production process adheres to an uncompromising artisanal ethos: a 168-hour fermentation using special Prometheus yeast lays the aromatic foundation, before distillation takes place over seven hours in a classic copper pot still with a double retort. The unique selling point of this batch, however, is the finishing process, during which the distillate is smoked over a genuine peat fire – a tribute to the island’s identity.

In the bottle, the spirit presents itself in a warm terracotta hue that already hints at the depth of its aromas. The bouquet is immediately dominated by a distinctive smoky note, which nevertheless leaves room for subtle nuances of cocoa and zesty orange. On the palate, a complex texture unfolds, where the spiciness of ginger and the tart sweetness of cocoa nibs meet the dry, peaty character of Islay peat. It is a captivating interplay between the dark fruitiness of a spiced rum and the powerful character of a smoky island spirit.

At the historic ‘Old Lemonade Factory’ in Port Ellen, the traditional Caribbean art of distillation is reinterpreted on Scottish soil. An unusually long fermentation period of 168 hours and the use of a classic copper pot still lay the complex foundations for this spirit. However, it derives its true identity from subsequent ageing in oak casks that previously held heavily peated Islay single malt whisky – a maturation process that forges a deep connection between the rum and its homeland.

In the glass, the rum presents a warm amber hue and immediately unfolds a multi-layered bouquet. Intense notes of smoke and peat blend harmoniously with the classic sweetness of toffee and vanilla, whilst a distinct maritime saltiness is reminiscent of the surf at Port Ellen. On the palate, it is full-bodied with an oily texture, with a subtle peppery spice marking the transition to a long-lasting, smoky-sweet finish.

Since 2022, a truly unique spirit has been produced on the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’: Islay Rum. Inspired by traditional Caribbean distillation methods, the Islay Rum Company – the island’s first and, to date, only rum distillery – produces rum varieties rich in esters using a pot still and twin retort still, adopting an experimental approach, working by hand and in small batches.

Between Kilnaughton Bay in Port Ellen and Borraichill Hill stands a pot and twin retort still that is unique in the UK. Developed by Head Distiller Ben Inglis, it produces Islay Rum – a smooth, ester-rich spirit that is effectively triple-distilled in a single distillation run. The base for this is molasses and aromatic residues from the previous distillation – essentially ‘Islay dunder’.
