For this edition in the "Benchmark" series, independent bottler Murray McDavid selected a Highland single malt distilled in 2011 that initially matured in classic sherry casks. It underwent a final finishing period in exclusive barriques from the renowned Bodegas Ximénez-Spínola. This dual maturation in high-quality European oak significantly shapes the character of the limited release—with only 928 bottles available.

On the nose, the honey-hued whisky reveals an inviting bouquet of milk chocolate, walnuts, and fresh cookie dough. On the palate, it makes a bold, full-bodied impression at a robust 57.2% ABV, where creamy malt meets the vibrant fruitiness of red apples and mixed berries. The finish is long-lasting, concluding elegantly with notes of dried cranberries, soft fudge, and a delicate hint of cinnamon pastry.

]]> Founded as recently as 1958 in Advie near Grantown-on-Spey in the Highlands, the distillery is already a designated historic landmark. Its water comes from the Achvochkie spring, and its whiskey is used primarily in blends such as Long John.

To bring the original character of the “Pearl of Speyside” back to the forefront and establish Tormore as a single malt. Unlike its predecessors, The GlenAllachie 2015/2026 – Sinteis Series Part IV takes a slightly different approach: Instead of blending two separately aged whiskies, Billy Walker first aged the whisky in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks before transferring it to Mongolian virgin oak barrels.

These barrels are incredibly rare, as the oak takes over a century to grow, and only trees that have fallen naturally may be harvested. With its dense and fine-grained structure, it imparts delicate notes of light caramel, honey, and floral nuances to the whiskey, which blend with the nutty, dark-fruity, and richly sweet characteristics of the sherry casks.

Founded in 1967, The GlenAllachie Distillery was owned by a foreign corporation for many years. In 2017, The GlenAllachie Distillers Company purchased the Speyside distillery—along with the filled casks in the warehouse. Its new owners: longtime Scottish whiskey expert Billy Walker and his partners Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson. The new team was introduced to the distillery’s unique features by long-time employees. Among these: The distillery has four stills and two separate spirit safes—allowing it to produce two different distillates simultaneously, such as peated and unpeated new make.
Until now, The GlenAllachie Distillery has produced almost exclusively for blended whiskies. Single malt, on the other hand, was extremely rare—available only through independent bottlers, for example. This changed in 2017 with the takeover by Billy Walker’s team. Age statements are important to The GlenAllachie for its single malts: The core range consists of 10-, 12-, 18-, and 25-year-old whiskies. In addition, regular single-cask and special releases are planned—and starting in 2018, even a smoky whisky.

For this small-batch bottling, only the very best first-fill PX sherry hogsheads were used – selected by master blender Dr Nick Savage – and the presentation is distinctly more upmarket, featuring elegant gift packaging and a heavy metal cap on the cork – exclusively available in Germany, as highlighted by the ‘Vibrant Stills’ sticker.
