Octomore 17.2 is the second release in the Seventeen Series and features double wood maturation. The intense smokiness of the malt meets fruity and spicy notes from the cask maturation: strawberry, blackberry, and cassis blend with steadily intensifying peat smoke. Pepper and earthy aromas are brightened by lemon zest and lime oil. The influence of port wine enhances the fruit and spices without pushing the barley and peat into the background. The result is a rich, lively, and harmoniously composed Islay single malt Scotch whisky.

In 1852, Thomas Pattison took over the distillery, which was closed later that same year. In 2008, Bruichladdich had plans to reopen Octomore, but these plans were never realized. However, since 2008, Bruichladdich has been bottling a heavily peated single malt under the name “Octomore.”

The rum matured for the first 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels and was then transferred to ex-port casks for 6 years. It was bottled at 57% ABV.

On the palate, this rum impresses with notes of honey and dark fruits. These are complemented by rich tones of maraschino cherries, stewed plums, and dried orange peel. The aroma is rounded out by vanilla, caramel, and earthy, savory notes of hazelnut and butterscotch.

]]> The distillery Arran is located on the head of an island that owns the same name and lays between the western coast of Scotland and the peninsula Kintryre. The island Arran has good access from Glasgow by car and ferry. The distillery started producing in 1995 on time delay, because of a pair of Golden Eagles that hatched right where the distillery was supposed to be build. It was built by Harold Currie, who had been very successful in the whisky industrie and even was director of Chevas. With building the distillery a big dream for him came true.

Finish: Long and smooth, nuts and spices remain in the memory.

]]> The name Balvenie is infered by the castle Balvenie which is located close by and means as much as ‘city of luck’. It is one of many distilleries of the village Dufftown, the secret ‘capital of whisky’ in the Speyside and is also named as ‘little sister’ of Glenfiddich. The distillery was built in 1892 nearly by one’s own hands by William Grant & Sons out of the ruins of the guesthouse. Today the distillery owns more than eight stills and since 1990 there is another distillery on the compound named Kininvie. The water that is used has its origin in the spring Robbie Dubh, the same spring Glenfiddich uses its water from.

]]> The distillery Cragganmore, which means as much as ‘big rock’, is located between Grantown- on-Spey and Aberlour near Ballingdalloch. John Smith built this distillery in 1870 after he had made experiences at Glenfarclas and Macallan. Since this whisky was popular since the beginning it mainly is used for making blends. Nowadays the Cragganmore distillery belongs to the Diageo imperium.

For the refinement, Guillaume Drouin, who runs the house today, remembered a tradition that his grandfather established and used port wine and sherry casks. The Calvados spent 21 months in port casks and another 20 months in casks that previously contained sherry. The result: a taste experience that is as traditional as it is original, with intense fruit and elegant spice.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Black currants and cider in combination with oily balsamic and oak.

Palate: Chocolate combines with grape must, apple cider and dark fruits. There are also notes of tar and ship's diesel as well as old oak wood, furniture polish, tobacco, leather and mineral notes.

Aftertaste: With a very powerful finale, the Calvados spoils the palates of experienced connoisseurs for a long time to come.

]]> The roots of the Chateau du Breuil go back to the 16th century. Originally built as a manor house, part of the estate was converted into a distillery in 1954.
With a collection of vintage calvados dating back to 1939, the Drouin house is the equivalent of Gordon & MacPhail in the calvados business. The apple brandy from Normandy is produced by double pot still distillation of cider, i.e. fermented apple must. At Drouin, the origin-protected speciality matures intensively in a selection of mostly smaller oak barrels. The house also experiments with finishes.

Since its foundation in 1825, the small Highland distillery has been working according to the same methods - and can even count as one of the few in Scotland a functioning water wheel among its interior fittings and circuit. Despite all the love of tradition, time does not stand still any more than the mill wheel. And so Glencadam is also experimenting. The best example is the Glencadam 15 y.o. Reserva De Porto Branco White Port Cask Finish.

Distilled in 2006, the limited special edition was first matured in bourbon casks, which Master Distiller Robert Fleming then selected for a finish in White Port Casks. "Porto Branco" or white port is based on white wine grapes, is fresh, intensely fruity and an excellent complement to Glencadam's distinctive profile. What does it taste like? Like red berry fruit, Victoria sponge cake and rhubarb compote.

]]> Glencadam, which translates as “Valley of the Wild Goose”, was commissioned in Brechin in 1825. Most of the production is used for the Ballantines brand. After 180 years in the whisky waiting loop, Glencadam took the step out of the shadow of the blend industry onto the stage of the original bottlers. But rather quietly. Their “East Highlands” single malt made from unpeated barley malt is still considered an insider tip today.
The whiskies, which are up to 30 years old and neither coloured nor chill-filtered, are produced in two original copper pot stills, just as they were in the founding days of the small distillery. Due to their construction, these produce a particularly delicate and soft spirit. This is because the Lyne arms run at an angle of 15 degrees upwards, not downwards.
