It is not only the former Laphroaig Distillery Manager and current Lochlea Production Director and Master Blender, John Campbell, who is responsible for the distinctive style of their single malt. As one of only four distilleries in Scotland, Lochlea uses only barley from its own cultivation and distils and matures its whisky on site.

Melbourne – the pleasure metropolis of Australia. A young and innovative food and bar scene animates the city on the southeast coast of the continent. Inspired by her, the Starward Distillery produces a whisky that is completely new for Australia, which focuses on the pleasure experience, turns its back on conventions – and simply allows everything that pleases and tastes. For example the enjoyment of single malt and Co. for a BBQ with friends, with a thriller on the couch, with pizza or banana bread.

Freed from tradition, the distillery looks at whisky through the eyes of brewers and winemakers. It is made exclusively from ingredients from the region. In addition to barley, mainly from slightly charred or steamed red wine barrels from Australian wineries. Starward Whisky only needs three years in them for its fruity maturity. Responsible for this: the Melbourne climate. Constant changes in weather, the so-called “Four seasons in a day” at an average of up to 22.5 ° C, allow distillates to ripen in an elementary way – and create a whisky that cannot be found anywhere else.

The distillery: back in Scottish private ownership since 2017
Founded in 1967, The GlenAllachie Distillery has long been foreign owned. In 2017, The GlenAllachie Distillers Company bought the distillery in Speyside – together with the filled casks in the warehouse. Its new owners: longtime Scotch whiskey luminary Billy Walker and his partners Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson. The new team was introduced to their special features by long-standing employees of the distillery. Below: The distillery has four stills and two separate spirit safes – and can therefore produce two different distillates in parallel, for example smoky and non-smoky New Make.
The GlenAllachie Distillery has so far produced almost exclusively blended whiskeys. Single malt, on the other hand, was extremely rarely available, for example through independent bottlers. This changed in 2017 with the takeover by Billy Walker’s team. Age information for its single malts is important to The GlenAllachie: The core range consists of a 10, 12, 18 and 25 year old whisky. In addition, regular single cask and special bottlings are planned – and from 2018 even a smoky whiskey.

One of them is the single malt left-field. The new star in the whisky sky is an accessible all-rounder and successor to the Two-Fold blend, which will be phased out. The relaxed single malt matures 100 percent in former red wine barrels made from French oak - for an intense and spicy mouthfeel with delicate wine aromas. The barrels come from the leading Australian wine regions, the Barossa Valley and the Yarra Valley. Burning out some of these “barrels” gives Left-Field additional dimensions. With its full-bodied, light and dark fruit and spicy oak notes, the Australian leaves plenty of room for individual enjoyment.

Tasting Notes:
Nose: Tropical fruits with aromas of red apple and fresh red berries.
Palate: Full-bodied, intense with light tropical fruits and notes of roasted oak.
Finish: More delicate with soft tannins and the flavor of French oak barrels.

Nova is the single malt from Starward. The Melbourne distillers around founder David Vitale use the darker and somewhat maltier malting barley of the "pale malt" type typical for Starward as a basis. Matured in minimally treated ex-red wine casks, Nova keeps the balance between complex notes of berry fruits, vanilla and caramel as well as fine spice. The nose and taste in particular are varied and complex. Fruity aromas from the wine barrel are very present. The finish tends to be a little thinner, which can be attributed to the younger age. On the whole, however, you can get a good idea of what you can expect from the distillery in the future.
