The Bunnahabhain Distillery is located on the Sound of Islay, in the northeastern corner of the island, directly across from the island of Jura\u2014so remote that when it was built in 1881, a long, winding road first had to be constructed down to the sea. The water used to make whiskey\u2014which is relatively low in peat for Islay\u2014comes from an underground spring, the Margadale River. After a total maturation period of twelve years, this whisky spent the last five years in first-fill Madeira barriques, which lend it an extraordinary aromatic complexity. The independent bottlers from Dornoch consistently preserve the integrity of the distillate and bottle the whiskey without any coloring agents to present the natural interaction between the wood and the spirit in its purest form. <\/p>\n
In the glass, the whiskey displays a warm amber hue that already hints at the influence of the fortified wine casks.
