The Islay Bruichladdich Distillery, whose name means ‘beach corner’, was built in 1881 by the Harley brothers. After the distillery had been closed for some time, it was announced on 12\/20\/2000 that it would soon be back in operation. Already in May 2001 the first new make flowed from the stills. The success of Bruichladdich is closely linked to the work of one of the most important men in the Scottish whiskey scene – Jim McEwan. In 2012 the distillery changed hands again for \u00a358m. Current owner is Remy Cointreau.<\/p>\n
In 2003 we received organic barley from Mid Coul Farm for the first time. With their manageable
\n2,755 acres and a highly progressive approach to absolute biodiversity, soil regeneration and an in-house energy production, recycling and fertilization concept, it is the ideal partner for our Organic Single Malt. The Rose family have been running Mid-Coul Farm in the north of Scotland since 1912. Their way of growing organic barley is based on the combination of using the latest technology and the knowledge and awareness of their ancestors with regard to an optimal balance between nature and people – i.e. cultivation without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. The most important thing for successful organic farming is to avoid monocultures. That is why our organic barley is grown alternately with other raw materials and is therefore not ready for harvest every year. Soil, climate and precipitation have an impact on taste. The result is the
\npure expression of the terroir in which the plant was allowed to grow. \nThe Black Art 11.1 is already the seventh edition from the pen of Head Distiller Adam Hannett and once again a wonderful example of perfection and craftsmanship. All the casks chosen predate the reopening of the Bruichladdich distillery. Thus, the whiskies for Black Art 11.1 were allowed to mature for almost a quarter of a century on the wild Hebridean island of Islay. Adam has our complete trust and has the freedom to choose the number of casks as well as the cask types alone that are blended together for a Black Art. This creates the mystical character of an almost indescribable single malt every time. The contents of the old casks are unique and inimitable – mysteriously united in the 24-year-old Black Art 11.1. Unpeated and matured for almost a quarter of a century in the distillery’s finest casks, Black Art 11.1 – like its six predecessors – is a wonderful symbiosis of courage, creativity and trust in our Head Distiller, our whiskies and our beloved home of Islay.”<\/p>\n
Tasting Notes:
\nDried fruit, leather and a hint of citrus immediately emerge on the nose, followed by a delicate bouquet of rosehip syrup, poached pear and sweet mango. On the palate, dried fruit, barley sugar, a touch of leather and toasted oak give way to a velvety butterscotch sweetness, balanced with nutty praline and a hint of coconut.
