The distillery was founded in 1825 by Alexander Kerr Mackay in Port Ellen on the island of Islay. It was ‘silent’ from 1929 to 1966 before it was finally closed in 1983. A spirit safe was installed in Port Ellen for the first time and the remaining listed warehouses are the oldest in Scotland.
