The founder of the Nikka Distillery, Masataka Teketsuru was born into a family, that was successfully producing Sake (rice wine) since 1733. His first employer sent him to Scotland to learn about the technique and distillation processes in the Whisky production.
Some years later he came back to Osaka and build Japans first Whisky Distillery – which made him the pioneer of the Japanese Whisky production. In 1934 he decided to go his own way and search for the right location for the perfect Japanese Whisky.

Nikka Coffey Gin is named after the still in which it is distilled, the Coffey Still. In addition to classic botanicals, Japanese citrus fruits such as yuzu, kabosu, and amanatsu are also used.
