The distillery: back in Scottish private ownership since 2017
Founded in 1967, The GlenAllachie Distillery has long been foreign owned. In 2017, The GlenAllachie Distillers Company bought the distillery in Speyside – together with the filled casks in the warehouse. Its new owners: longtime Scotch whiskey luminary Billy Walker and his partners Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson. The new team was introduced to their special features by long-standing employees of the distillery. Below: The distillery has four stills and two separate spirit safes – and can therefore produce two different distillates in parallel, for example smoky and non-smoky New Make.
The GlenAllachie Distillery has so far produced almost exclusively blended whiskeys. Single malt, on the other hand, was extremely rarely available, for example through independent bottlers. This changed in 2017 with the takeover by Billy Walker’s team. Age information for its single malts is important to The GlenAllachie: The core range consists of a 10, 12, 18 and 25 year old whisky. In addition, regular single cask and special bottlings are planned – and from 2018 even a smoky whiskey.

4cl sample of Glenallachie 19 Year Old Solera Sherry
Some bottlings tell a story the moment you encounter them—this 19-year-old GlenAllachie whispers of decades spent in Andalusian bodegas and the masterful patience of Speyside craftsmanship. When spirit meets wood that has housed fine sherry for over half a century, a depth emerges that far surpasses the ordinary. It is a liquid testament to the close bond between Scottish distilling artistry and Spanish cask traditions.
Renowned for his precise cask management, Master Distiller Billy Walker has unearthed a true rarity for the “Masters of Wood” series. This single malt matured in ex-Solera sherry casks that had previously been part of a traditional Solera system for over 55 years. These venerable casks impart a unique complexity—achieved only through the passage of vast amounts of time and dedicated craftsmanship—before the whisky was bottled at a robust 50% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Notes of ripe plum meld with the dark sweetness of molasses and rich mocha. A hint of honeycomb and cocoa lends the nose a profound, inviting richness.
Taste: On the palate, a dense medley of plum syrup and heather honey unfolds, accented by a delicate touch of spicy cinnamon. The texture is silky, impressing with remarkable aromatic depth.
Finish: The finish is distinguished by the noble astringency of ripe walnuts and intense dark chocolate. An elegant lingering note of dried fruit ensures a long-lasting, multi-layered conclusion.
As with all the single malts in his aromatic Wood Finish range, Billy Walker collaborated with niche producers for this 11-year-old. In Sicily, he unearthed small quantities of exceptional Marsala casks that complement the GlenAllachie character beautifully. At 48% ABV, uncoloured and non-chill-filtered, it is full-bodied and fruity, pleasantly sweet and velvety smooth.
