INDIA

India is one of the largest whisky producing nations in terms of volume. In the former British colony, whisky based on the Scottish model has been produced since the end of the colonial period in the 1940s. Due to the prevailing climate there, the whiskey matures particularly quickly and the evaporation process, the Angels Share, is many times higher than in Scotland. The best-known distillery in the country is the Amrut Distillery, which clearly stands out from the other manufacturers due to the quality of its products. Scottish barley is also used in part for production.

The Amrut Fusion is made from lightly peaty barley from Scotland and unpeated barley from India. No age is indicated on the bottle, but it matured for around 4 1/2 years in virgin oak and ex bourbon barrels. Due to the climate, this whisky can be compared to older whiskys from Scotland

Whisky has been making history in India for over 150 years. However, the history of Indian whisky on a Scottish level only began around the turn of the millennium. And it began with Amrut. India's flagship distillery was the first in the country to produce genuine single malt and established its quality whisky from Bangalore around the globe. The ambitious distillers rely on small-grained and thus sweeter Indian barley from the foot of the Himalayas. Only for peated bottlings does Amrut use barley malt from Scotland. For an exclusive European bottling, the experimental friends rely on Andalusian cask material. At 60% Cask Strength, the Amrut Oloroso Cask 2015/2022 combines slightly peated Indian single malt with the dark-fruity, nutty character of the former sherry cask. 480 bottles of the 7-year-old exotic (although they were apparently a little unsure about the bottling month) were bottled.

On the other hand, Amrut launched a completely new brand in 2021 with Single Malts of India. The aim of the brand is to bring together previously hidden Indian whiskey pearls from various distilleries under one roof. The pioneer bottling, Neidhal, is the first independently bottled single malt in India, according to Amrut. Neidhal, the coastal region, stands for one of the five regions of the world classified in ancient Tamil texts - each with its own characteristics. And now also our own whiskey. As a representative of the Indian coastal landscape, the peated single malt refined by Amrut shows tropical fruits and sweet vanilla as well as soft phenols, sea salt and iodine.
