Laphroaig, the “depression on the large white bay”, was opened in 1826 on the south coast of the Isle of Islay by Donald and Alex Johnston. It is known for its smoky-phenolic, iodine-containing and salty whisky, on which many discussions unfold. Laphroaig has its own peat fields (the shortest railway in the world) and floor maltings.

This whisky tells the story of 200 years whisky production and is the personal interpretation of former traditions by John Campbell. The bottling matured in different casks: Ex-Bourbon Barrels, Oloroso Sherry Hogsheads, European Oak Casks as well as Quarter Casks. This represents the typical notes of the Laphroaig, smoke with peat, fruity, floral and a bit caramel and vanilla.

Islay's climate has barely left its mark on this bottling; it's too young for that. And the few months in the small quarter casks do their part: The monster that Laphroaig can be transforms into a relatively tame, slow-moving malt that flexes its certainly existing muscles very restrainedly. Beautifully smoky and a good companion for a cold winter afternoon by the fire.

The second bottling from Laphroaig's Elements series was allowed to ferment for 115 hours, i.e. almost 5 days. This long fermentation time ensures that significantly more fruit flavours than usual emerge and the smoke recedes a little into the background. For this reason, it was also decided to mature the spirit in bourbon casks in order to emphasise the lighter character of the distillate.

This Laphroaig 1990 from Hunter Laing's "Old & Rare" series is limited to only 456 bottles after maturing in a sherry cask. The whisky was bottled on the occasion of the coronation of King Charles III. Official Tasting Note: This light gold-coloured whisky is beatifully complex on the nose with gentle Islay peat, sea-spray, medicinal notes, lemon zest and leather notes. Beach bonfire, seaweed, more citrus and wonderfully delcate Islay peat notes on the palate, leading into a long, lingering satisfying finish.
