The Bunnahabhain distillery is so isolated on the Sound of Islay on the northeast corner of the island directly opposite the island of Jura that when it was built in 1881 a long and winding road down to the sea had to be built. The water for whisky production that is relatively low in peat for Islay comes from an underground source, the Margadale River. Until 2003 it was owned by the descendants of the founders, Highland Destillers. Current owner is Burn Stewart Distillers.
