The distillery of the same name is located at the foot of Scotland’s highest mountain, the Ben Nevis in the western Highlands near Fort William. It was built in 1825 by John McDonald, a descendant of the Lord of the Isles. Production was discontinued between 1984 and 1990, and after Nikka took over in 1989, production resumed one year later. The water for the Ben Nevis comes from the Allt A Mhullin Burn.

The novelties matured exclusively in sherry butts, starting with the dark Ben Nevis 2013/2022. The single malt with rough edges is created by short fermentation and short distillation in the Spirit Still. Behind the scenes at The Single Malts of Scotland (Elixir Distillers), two of the most renowned whisky personalities in the world pull the strings: brothers Rajbir Singh and Sukhinder Singh. Kirsch Import has secured three single casks from the series of consistently outstanding bottlings exclusively for Kirsch customers.

Ben Nevis, as connoisseurs celebrate it: tropical fruits, jellied sweets, stone fruit and a wonderfully spicy depth. Thirty years in a hogshead have given it structure and character without making it seem heavy. The 45.1% ABV is perfectly integrated and carries the flavours so cleanly that the finish simply refuses to end – rather as if it had decided to stay for another round. A cask you can only find if you know exactly where to look. When Carsten Ehrlich and Jens Drewitz select whiskies together, the scene knows: this won’t be a fluke, it will be a statement. The pair have been deeply immersed in the whisky game for years, having tasted, assessed, rejected and celebrated countless casks – and it is precisely this expertise, coupled with a healthy dose of friendship, that goes into the second joint batch from Sansibar Whisky & The Whisky Agency. Just in time for the Whisky Fair in Limburg, they are presenting four bottlings that demonstrate why Carsten & Jens are among the most reliable noses and finest palates in the industry.

An expressive Ben Nevis 2012/2025. Twelve years in Ruby Port Butt gave it notes of shortcrust pastry and surprisingly light fruity notes for the cask type. Exciting: it is actually a very old tawny port butt in which Ruby Port was transported for bottling.

Ben Nevis Traditional Peated is a homage to the time when the grain was still dried over peat smoke. The first peated Ben Nevis d from new production was launched on the market in 2011, at that time still as a limited edition. Today, the peated malt is part of the distillery's standard range.
