The name of the distillery Balvenie is derived from the nearby Balvenie Castle and means city of happiness. It is one of the many distilleries in the village of Dufftown, the secret “whiskey capital” in the Speyside and is also known as “Glenfiddich’s little sister”. The distillery was built almost by hand by William Grant & Sons in 1892 from the remains of the dilapidated guest house at Balvenie Castle. Today the distillery has 8 stills and since 1990 there has been another whisky distillery on the grounds of the distillery. The water comes from the Robbie Dubh spring, from which the water for the Glenfiddich comes.

Balvenie Burnhead Wood is made entirely from local ingredients grown in Dufftown. This Balvenie has a delicate fruity expression, which is partly due to heather from the Balvenie estate. Nose: Vibrant notes of geranium and fig oil complemented by fresh herbal notes. Flavour: Aromas of cloves, honey and caramelized dates are overlaid with spices & citrus fruits. The sweetness of the whiskey is based on an underlying, oaky dryness. Finishes: oaky & dried flowers. Generally long lasting.

The Balvenie 14 Year Old Week of Peat contains whisky that is only produced for one week a year. When the distillery is closed for cleaning and maintenance, heavily peated barley malt is distilled beforehand. The first and second run is stored in additional tanks and reused the following year, so each vintage is linked together. The peat content in the malt is around 30 ppm.
