The Auchentoshan distillery (“field of the corner”) is located on the western outskirts of Glasgow, close to the River Clyde and the Eskine Bridge. Although it uses water that comes from the Kilpatrick Hills, already part of the Highlands whisky region, Auchentoshan is considered part of the Lowlands. It is the only remaining distillery with three stills of different sizes that uses the triple distillation process that used to be typical and common in this region, making the whisky smooth and fragrant. According to stories, it was founded as early as 1800 by John Bulloch. However, the official date of foundation is 1823. Today, after an eventful history and countless changes of ownership, the distillery belongs to the Beam Suntory group.

With its three styles in different sizes, Auchentoshan produces about 1,650,000 million litres of alcohol a year. Most of the spirit produced is used for the company’s own brand and is therefore rarely found in blends. Every now and then, an independently bottled cask appears on the market. The core range is very extensive, containing various age gradations and also cask constellations.

Although the New Make has an alcohol content of 80-82% after triple distillation, it is diluted directly with water and enters the cask at 63.5%. The distillery’s basic style is what you would expect from a triple distillation: smooth & pleasant. The older Auchentoshan bottlings are quite convincing with a surprisingly full-bodied complexity.
