Ardnamurchan

Ardnamurchan is a distillery in the western Highlands that, like so many other distilleries, can look back on an eventful history. In short, it was founded and operated by Charles and David Gray in Glasgow as early as 1826. After years of ups and downs, the distillery was finally closed in 1968 and finally dismantled by 1971.
In 1993, the story of the current distillery began with the descendants of the former founders. Jamie Walker founded the independent bottler called “Adelphi” and sold the company ten years later for reasons of age in 2007. The new owners, Keith Falconer & Donald Houston decided to add their own distillery to the portfolio: The birth of today’s Ardnamurchan Distillery, now located in the Western Highlands. The construction of the distillery presented some challenges: due to the very narrow access road, the mash tun could only be planned as large as the passage allowed at the narrowest point.
In the meantime, single malt has been coming out of their stills since 2014 and more and more bottlings are seeing the light of day. Ardnamurchan also produces peated as well as unpeated styles and is estimated to produce 180,000 litres of alcohol a year, although up to 500,000 litres would be possible.
The cornerstones of the Ardnamurchan brand include transparency and sustainability. For example, the QR code on each bottle allows the supply chain to be traced, including the fermentation period, the malt or barrel used. The electricity for production is generated from hydroelectric generators. The heat comes from a biomass boiler. In addition, all by-products are recycled, for example by serving as animal feed or fertiliser.

If there is a summer whisky, then this is it! AD/The Midgie is now as much a part of summer as the mosquitoes that give it its name. As soon as you step outside the door on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, you can no longer avoid them. The recipe for the AD/The Midgie bottling is made up of 50% bourbon casks, 48% port casks and 2% sherry casks - 75% unpeated and 25% peated casks - so slightly smoky and bottled at a solid 48% vol. - a fruity-floral blend of sweet and salty with a hint of smoke and a solid, dry finish.
