Ardmore
The Ardmore distillery is located south of Huntley in Kennethmont directly on the railway line from Aberdeen to Inverness and is sometimes still counted as part of Speyside, but sometimes already as part of the Eastern Highlands. It was founded & built in 1898 by Adam Teacher. It had a comparatively quiet history and remained in the ownership of its founders for a long time. Since 1974 it has had 8 stills, was taken over by Pernod Ricard in 2005 and had to be sold again due to antitrust issues, so that it now belongs to the Beam Suntory group.
Today’s Ardmore distillery has no relation to the Ardmore distillery, which existed on Islay from 1817 to 1938. Ardmore’s basic still is characterised by a pleasant, finely integrated smoke with often integrated citrus notes. With a total of 8 stills, about 5,200,000 million litres of alcohol are produced per year. In addition, different styles are possible. For example, the distillery’s unpeated malt is called Ardlair.
Ardmore itself has only a few of its own bottlings in its portfolio, including the Ardmore Legacy or the 12 Year Port Wood Finish. It is not uncommon to find independently bottled Ardmores on the market. In addition, part of the production goes into making the “Teacher’s Highland Cream” blend.

This Ardmore 2008 was chosen during a dealer's trip to London. Together with a few colleagues, we decided on a few barrels from Berry Bro's. The whisky matured in a Madeira cask and is limited to 253 bottles. The Ardmore was bottled with a cask strength of 56.3%.
Our Tasting Notes
This Ardmore successfully combines a pleasant peat smoke note (which is rather gentle compared to peated Islay whiskeys due to the Highland peat used) with the sweetness of the Madeira cask in which it spent the second part of its maturing period. Cold campfire in the nose, then a lush sweetness on the palate that quickly alternates with pleasant oily-smoky notes.

This 2008 Ardmore single cask was bottled by Malts of Scotland. It was matured in a Ruby Port Cask, which produced 194 bottles.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: subtle dusty smoke, spicy wood notes, plum in Armagnac, dried peaches, cold charcoal
Taste: dark cherries, smooth smoke with a little peat, toffee, caramel syrup, dried fruit, fine spices

This 2008 Ardmore single cask was bottled by Malts of Scotland. The maturation took place in a bourbon barrel, which resulted in 158 bottles. The whiskey is neither chill filtered nor colored and was bottled at cask strength.

This 11 year old Ardlair whisky was bottled by the Thompson Bros after aging in a refill barrel. The keg yielded 287 bottles at 50%.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Galia Melon, conference pears, subtle peat, green olives (sweet), green apple peel, rubbed sage
Palate: White stone fruits, melon, apple juice, gentle warming smoke. Some olive oil and white pepper
Finish: Long with peat smoke, crushed seashells, green olives, brine and warm buttered peaches.

This 15 year old Ardmore was bottled in November 2024 for the Best Dram series. The whisky matured in a 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry Hogshead and has a cask strength of 58.2%.
In total, the cask with the number 2618 produced 278 bottles.

This 23-year-old Ardmore was bottled by Elixir Distillers for their own "The Single Malts of Scotland" series. It spent the full maturation period in a hogshead and brings a great spiciness that pairs perfectly with the subtle smoke. This bottling is limited to 223 bottles.
