BLENDED

Without blended Scotch whisky there would be no single malt!

This sentence applies without restriction, as even today the majority of Scottish whisky is produced for blends. Resourceful Scottish grocers such as Messrs. Walker, the Chivas Brothers or the Dewars family came up with the idea of creating their “house whisky” – they mixed (blended) malt whiskeys from different distilleries with different styles and then filled them up with grain whisky. That was the birth of Blended Scotch Whisky. Some of these whiskys, which are still around today, have now become well-known and successful brands worldwide. And it still applies today: the higher the proportion of malt whiskys in a blend, the higher the quality of this whisky.

Blended whiskeys that are produced without the addition of grain and for the production of which only single malt whiskys are married are also referred to as “blended malt whisky”.
