ARMAGNAC

Armagnac is a brandy from the region of the same name in Gascony, south of Cognac. Armagnac is made analogously to cognac from the grapes Ugni-Blanc (Trebbiano), Folle Blanche and Colombard. The biggest difference in production lies in the distillation. Unlike cognac, armagnac is not distilled in copper alembics but, like American bourbon, in so-called column alembics, which are usually made of copper. The Argmanac is only distilled once (not twice like cognac). This leads to a broader range of aromas than is known from cognac. When it comes to age labeling, Armagnac uses the same labels as Cognac: VS, VSOP & XO.

Our GrapeDiggaz Armagnac Maison Aurian 1995 is a special distillate made from 30% Ugni Blanc and 70% Baco grapes. The hybrid grape is a cross between the Folle Blanche and Noah varieties. Created in 1898, the acidic Baco grape is now only grown on a small scale. It gives the exclusive bottling a full-bodied profile with dark fruits, molasses notes and spices like cinnamon.

The Domaine du Pin 1985/2025 has matured for an impressive 40 years. The single cask was produced by Monique Destribats in 1985 in the picturesque village of Labastide d'Armagnac, which stands on sandy soils. Consisting of half Baco and half Colombard grapes, this rarity was continuously distilled to 60% and bottled in January 2025 at a still cask strength of 40% vol. Its beautiful amber colour with mahogany and gold nuances leads to remarkably fine aromas. Candied orange peel, nougat and gingerbread meet acacia honey, liquorice, vanilla and fresh tobacco. The palate impresses with great balance, a velvety mouthfeel and a freshness that defies the long ageing process.

In the limited Borderline product range, Darroze demonstrates the expertise it has gained over 50 years of ageing using eaux-de-vie that are refined in wine or spirits barrels. Although this procedure no longer allows this ‘Brandy Français’ to be bottled as Armagnac, it does reveal the region's new potential. This is demonstrated by the Borderline Brandy Français - Chardonnay Finish with a finesse-rich profile in which citrus peel, grapes and peach meet vanilla, caraway and nuts.
