In addition to aromatic kaffir lime leaves, the Queen of the Night plays a major role in the LoneWolf Cactus and Lime Gin. The fragrant cactus flower blooms only after sunset. The new handcrafted gin was launched at a special event on the island. It is distilled in a Frilli copper still using an expert blend of ten botanicals. The team at Raasay Distillery say the result is a "complex but well balanced" dry gin with a lingering aftertaste "that reflects the style, character and impressive geological diversity of Raasay". Resident botanist Dr Stephen Bungard and Fiona Williamson, MSc fellow at Herriot Watt, who knows Raasay well having worked at the distillery for a summer season in 2018, worked with distillery staff to perfect the recipe, which includes rhubarb root, lemon and orange peel, coriander seed and cubeb pepper, as well as triple-distilled Raasay gin.
