Matusalem was founded in 1872 in Santiago de Cuba. The knowledge about destillation and especially about the maturation in solery systems came from spain. Only 11 years later Matusalem won international prices for their rum. Until the 1950s Matusalem had a market share of 50% in Cuba.
After the sudden death of the owner and the takeover of Castro the family had to leave Cuba. Through different internal struggles the brand got almost lost until the middle of the 1990s, when Claudio Alvarez Salazar began to revive the brand. Production started again in 2002, but now in the republic dominican.
