With Lochlea, the Scottish distillery landscape has grown to include an independent, family-run farm distillery. It is not only the former Laphroaig Distillery Manager and current Lochlea Production Director and Master Blender, John Campbell, who is responsible for the distinctive style of their single malt. As one of only four distilleries in Scotland, Lochlea uses only barley from its own cultivation and distils and matures its whisky on site.
With the “Seasonal Releases”, Lochlea reflects what happens on the farm with the changing of the seasons. In spring, for example, everything comes to life and the seeds for this year’s barley are sown. While the inspiration for the Lochlea Sowing Edition (Second Crop) remains the same, the new bottling shows the evolution of Lochlea whisky a year later.
For Second Crop, they used first fill bourbon barrels that were stored further up in the warehouse. Exposed to more warmth and thus more intensive maturation, the single malt shows a clear change in taste: Sweet red apple and ripe pear are followed by notes of vanilla pods and almond oil, which lead into a fresh, pine forest-tasting finish.
