This single malt was distilled at the Caol Ila Distillery on June 6, 2016, and matured for over a decade before being finished by the independent bottler Best Dram on July 17, 2026. It owes its distinctive complexity to a finishing period in a first-fill Chardonnay butt from the renowned South Tyrolean winery St. Michael-Eppan. With a limited release of just 674 bottles, this bottling offers a rare opportunity to experience the combination of Islay peat and a Burgundian grape variety.

On the nose, bright citrus notes and green apple unfold initially, underpinned by a delicate vanilla sweetness and a salty note. On the palate, the whisky is powerful and oily; juicy yellow fruits meld with a creamy sweetness before a subtle peat smoke emerges. The finish is long-lasting and dry, characterized by mineral salinity and elegant citrus zest that evokes the rugged coast of Islay.

This unpeated Islay malt was crafted at the Bunnahabhain Distillery, located in the remote north of the island of Islay, and was brought to perfection under the expert supervision of Thompson Bros. After a total maturation period of twelve years, this whisky spent the last five years in first-fill Madeira barriques, which lend it an extraordinary aromatic complexity. The independent bottlers from Dornoch consistently preserve the integrity of the distillate and bottle the whiskey without any coloring agents to present the natural interaction between the wood and the spirit in its purest form.

In the glass, the whiskey displays a warm amber hue that already hints at the influence of the fortified wine casks. The bouquet reveals a delicate balance of soft, ripe red berries and the rich texture of walnut oil, accompanied by a subtle marine note. On the palate, a full-bodied structure unfolds, where the fruity sweetness of Madeira wine meets Bunnahabhain’s characteristic, subtle coastal saltiness, resulting in a remarkably balanced flavor profile.

Laphroaig, the “hollow by the great white bay,” was founded in 1826 on the south coast of the island of Islay by Donald and Alex Johnston. It is known for its smoky, phenolic, iodine-rich, and salty whiskey, which is the subject of much debate. Laphroaig has its own peat fields (accessible via the world’s shortest railroad line) and its own floor malting facility.

This cask-strength bottling showcases Bunnahabhain exactly as it matures in the warehouse: unpeated, fruity, with gentle spice and the characteristic coastal freshness—undiluted, without chill filtration, and without added color. For the 2026 release, Bunnahabhain’s Master Blender Julieann Fernandez combines 50% first-fill Oloroso casks with 50% bourbon casks. The result is robust and cask-forward, yet wonderfully sweet, creamy, and approachable.

The Oloroso casks contribute the classic Bunnahabhain richness: dried fruits, gentle spice, and chocolate. The Bourbon casks add notes of vanilla, honey, and toasted coconut, making the whiskey rounder and creamier. Aging in the warehouses right on Bunnahabhain Bay imparts a subtle hint of salt and sea air to the whole blend. The spiciness is present and perfectly integrated—powerful, yet never overpowering.

Tasting Notes:
Nose: Raisins, figs, and dates with honey and vanilla, followed by cinnamon and cloves. Underneath, fresh coastal notes.
Taste: An abundance of stewed fruits and warming spices, balanced by creamy vanilla and toasted coconut, with a hint of the sea.
Finish: Long and complex: dried fruit and spice that give way to dark sugar and polished mahogany.

Ardbeg 19 years “Traigh Bhan” Batch 7 – 50,3%

The name Ardbeg means as much as ‘little hill’. It is located at the southern coast of the whisky island Islay between Port Ellen and Kildalton. The location already has been popular for illegal distilleries. After a history with ups and downs including temporary close-downs the distillery was inherited by Glenmorangie PLC in 1997, which were themselves bought by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy in 2004. Today it is one of the most famous distilleries in Scotland, known for its smokey, peaty and salty bottlings with strong note of phenol. Two bottlings are named like the lakes the water of the distillery comes from: Loch Arinambeast and Loch Uigeadail. In 2015 Ardbeg celebrated its bicentenary.

The distillery was opened by Anthony Wills in 2005. It was the first new-opening of a distillery on Islay after a pause of 125 years. It is located in the northwestern part of the island on a former farmer area and is the only distillery on Islay that isn’t located next to the sea. It also is the only distillery on Islay which may call itself ‘100% Islay’, using all the ingredients and doing every producing step on the island.

The Bunnahabhain Distillery on Islay is known for its unpeated malts, which are distilled from malted barley. This 2018 vintage was aged in a single sherry cask that had been used for aging before—a refill sherry hogshead that imparts a gentle sherry note to the whiskey without overpowering it. In 2025, it was selected by Stuart Urquhart for Gordon & MacPhail's "Spirit of Scotland" series and bottled at a natural cask strength of 60.7% vol. Neither cold filtration nor color additives were used, so the color in the glass comes exclusively from the aging process.

This single malt comes from the renowned Caol Ila Distillery and was curated by the long-established firm Gordon & MacPhail for the exclusive “Spirit of Scotland” series. Stuart Urquhart personally selected a first-fill sherry hogshead for this release, in which the distillate has been allowed to develop its exceptional complexity since 2012. Bottled in 2026, the whiskey is presented in its purest form: unfiltered at cold temperatures and in its natural color, drawn directly from the cask into the bottle.

The distillery whose name means as much as ‘great barrier’ is located next to the shore of Loch Indaal in the center of the isle Islay. Founded in 1779 it is one of the oldest distilleries in Sotland, owned by the japanese Suntory Group. The water comes from the River Laggan.
