GROSPERRIN

The sound of a bronze bell fills the maturing cellar of the Grosperrin house every day. With a perfect “F”, the small team of the family-run company celebrates the treasures they keep in the cellar on the banks of the Charente: extraordinary, partly very old and limited cognacs from all crus, the growing areas of the cognac region. Founder Jean Grosperrin could not have foreseen that the family would be known for this unique collection today. Once a shepherd and shearer, he learned the art of distillation in the 1980s before settling down as a cask broker in the Cognac region. When he began bottling the first casks independently in 1999, Jean Grosperrin had become acquainted with all facets of the cognac industry, from producer to supplier – and accumulated knowledge of the rare, extremely valuable cognacs that slumbered in the cellars of the Charente province. Almost 4,300 domains, some of them very small, make up the rich and infinitely varied fabric of the Cognac region. Mostly in family hands for generations, the producers have very old barrels, some from internal family estates. Through his numerous contacts, Jean Grosperrin made these cognacs accessible to connoisseurs. Grosperrin Cognac now works closely with over 150 owners across all six crus. Since 2004, the team has been managed by the second generation, Guilhem Grosperrin. His motto: pass on the heritage of the Charente in its purest form. Hardly anywhere else in the region can you find cognacs that are as pure, authentic and “straight from the cask” as at Grosperrin. Each of them is a snapshot – the reflection of the terroir and the men and women who animate it. Guilhem Grosperrin and his team make no difference between the crus, which also serve as quality levels for cognac, but always reflect the best from the individual growing areas with their independent bottlings – 100% transparent, neither chill-filtered nor colored.
