This Swedish single malt whisky from the Agitator distillery was distilled in 2018 and bottled in 2023 for the Collective #1 series after maturation in a first-fill sherry hogshead.

"With a complex body, this Swedish whisky greets the nose with notes of mushroom and moss. Subsequent notes of fine peat smoke and umami follow. The Berry Bros. & Rudd Agitator is full-bodied and spicy on the palate. It tastes of leather, waffles, and pastries. [Subsequent notes]" There are maritime salt notes and smoke. The finish is spicy and long-lasting. The Agitator bids farewell with smoke and dried fruit.

]]> Sweden only moved onto the whisky map after Mackmyra was founded in the late 1990s. With Smögen Whisky, the young whisky nation has another landmark. The distillery is named after a Swedish picture-perfect fishing village in the Skagerrak. However, it owes its popularity among connoisseurs in and outside Sweden to its intensely smoky small batch single malts, which are now also available in Germany.

The whiskys are handcrafted down to the last drop. The hands belong to the founder, lawyer, whisky enthusiast and author Pär Caldenby, who was able to separate the tailings from the heart of a distillate at Smögen Whisky for the first time in August 2010. He built his craft distillery from scratch in the outbuildings of a former farm. These house, among other things, two small copper pot stills (one only holds 900 liters), bourbon and sherry casks as well as a “worm tub condenser” – a cooling system that has become rare, which makes the raw spirit heavier and fuller.

In general, the following applies to Smögens single malts: They are powerful, distinctive drops with a clear smoky note, maritime echoes and malty sweetness. For Heavily Peated Swedish Single Malts in the same peat weight class as Caol Ila or Ballechin, Caldenby imports peat malt from Scotland.

For Cinco, a number of casks have been used in which five different types of sherry have previously matured. The five varieties are Oloroso, Fino, Pedro Ximénez, Amontillado and Palo Cortado.
Originally, these casks were to be used for an advanced master class, but instead High Coast decided to blend some of the casks together: this became Cinco.
High Coast believes that no other whisky has yet been created by combining these five different styles of sherry.
Cinco was launched as a web release on Systembolaget.se on 1 June and sold out the same day. It will also be available in selected international markets.

Not real ones, anyway, although there are some Solera offerings that offer a sharing experience. Now the Northerners of High Coast have put their own stamp on this classic Spanish system for salting and developing quality spirits. This is already the second bottling of the Solera series.

A Solera system is based on the continuous blending of younger and older spirits, increasing complexity. This means that each bottling contains a small amount of whiskey from the very first batch. In our case, High Coast set up a six-story system in one of the warehouses. At the very bottom are the solera casks, in this case 225 liter Swedish oak casks. The whiskey is bottled from these casks. Above that are five tiers of so-called "criaderas" with bourbon casks containing 200 liters of decreasingly aged whiskey. The top Criadera is the youngest, and new distillate is refilled here with each bottling from the bottom solera cask. The kegs of each floor are refilled after filling from the kegs above (see illustration under "Further information").
In a way, it's not just blending different ages of whiskey and different batches of distillates. With High Coast Whisky it is also different seasons and climates that blend over a long period of time to create a unique picture - a tasteful, nuanced shadow of our riverside location.

The powerful, characterful drop with clear smoky notes, maritime hints and malty sweetness matured for six years in a First Fill PX Sherry Hogshead. The interplay with the Andalusian cask results in a complex flavour profile of ripe berry fruit, dark chocolate and malt with peat smoke and a spiciness that transports you to the coniferous forests of Sweden.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: dark berry fruits such as blackberries against a tangy fruity background, plus rhubarb, caramelised cane sugar and milk chocolate with nuttiness and a subtle spice reminiscent of coniferous forests.
Palate: full-bodied and dark, spicy, but at the same time gentle and mild with dark chocolate, overripe blackberries and block malt. Then light peat smoke, maritime hints and spicy pine needles.
Finish: dark, fruity and creamy with discreet peat smoke, dark chocolate and fading fine spice.
