This 33-year-old Mortlach matured in a refill butt from 1989 to 2022 before being bottled by Hunter Laing for their Old & Rare series. The cask yielded 311 bottles at 52.9% ABV.

Tasting Notes
Aroma: Dense, earthy, stewed red fruits.
Taste: Smoked ham, tobacco, prunes, figs.
Finish: Lingers on sherry oak tannins.

Arran 1998 Hunter Laing Old & Rare – 55,8%

The distillery Arran is located on the head of an island that owns the same name and lays between the western coast of Scotland and the peninsula Kintryre. The island Arran has good access from Glasgow by car and ferry. The distillery started producing in 1995 on time delay, because of a pair of Golden Eagles that hatched right where the distillery was supposed to be build. It was built by Harold Currie, who had been very successful in the whisky industrie and even was director of Chevas. With building the distillery a big dream for him came true.

The High Coast (formerly Box) Distillery is located on the Angerman River in northern Sweden. In the former sawmill, whiskey is now produced 6 days a week.

Craigellachie 2008 Hunter Laing HL19718 – 50%

The Craigellachie distillery is in Speyside. Once founded by Peter Mackie, among others, the distillery, which was built in 1891, is now owned by the Bacardi Martini Group. During the renovation in 1964 the distillery was expanded to 4 stills. The water no longer comes from the Hill of Little Conval as it used to, but from Blue Hill. During production, the steam is cooled down by so-called “worm tubs” – spiral-shaped copper tubes. Due to this process, the new make has little contact with copper during production, which creates a strong taste.

Craigellachie 2009 Thompson Bros – 50%

This 13 year old Craigellachie matured in two refill hogsheads and was bottled by Thompson Bros. In total, the casks yielded 628 bottles with an alcohol content of 50%.

Official Tasting Notes:

Nose: Kilned malt, fermenting washbacks; pineapple, pears and apples. Quite big and slightly oily with barley sugar, soft fruits and berries. Some almonds and serrano ham.

Palate: Lots of dried barley, more raw ham, olive oil, pineapple soda, lime zest.

Finish: More zesty lime, almond butter, ginger tea and pineapple cubes.

Ballechin 2007 Straight From The Cask #199/#200/#203 – 57.5%

The distillery is located a few miles west of Pitlochry at Moulin and belongs to the whisky region of the Highlands. It was probably founded in 1825 and is the only Scottish distillery that is still completely preserved in the style of farmhouse operations. At the same time, it was the smallest distillery in Scotland for a long time. The two stills produced just 15 barrels a week. Today’s production capacity is around 500,000 litres of pure alcohol per year, following the commissioning of an extension to the distillery in February 2018. Since the original Ballechin distillery no longer exists, the peated variant of Edradour is offered under this name.

Aultmore 2008 “The Owl” Old Particular by Douglas Laing – 60.5%

This 14-year-old Aultmore was bottled by Douglas Laing for its own "Old Particular" series. Distilled in September 2008, the whisky matured in a sherry butt, which gave it typical sherry aromas of dried fruit, dark red fruits and chocolate. The single cask, limited to 283 bottles, was bottled exclusively for the German market.

Unique casks, personally and locally selected in Scotland's whisky regions, always cask strength, never chill-filtered or coloured. Sounds magical? No wonder, because these Best Drams are the work of Michel Reick, who as a whisky druid makes the magic of handpicked casks accessible to connoisseurs. Five newcomers make magical moments of enjoyment possible this week.

The new Best Drams have had between 6 and 15 years to develop their exquisite aromas. The single cask bottlings open up exciting perspectives for whisky fans on distilleries from the Isle of Islay, from Speyside and the Highlands - in combination with the classic bourbon barrel or aromatic (sweet) wine casks.

Characteristic peat smoke and maritime notes, on the other hand, combine harmoniously with sweet grapes, plum and spices in the Islay Single Malt Caol Ila 2007/2022. Responsible for this: the finish in the First Fill Ruby Port Cask.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Peat smoke with a maritime, slightly iodine note in combination with port, dark grapes, some plum and a hint of nutmeg before the smoke subsides.

Palate: Powerful attack with intense peat smoke. Iodine passes to the fruity sweetness of fully ripe grapes and finally spicier notes of thyme, nutmeg and a hint of cinnamon.

Aftertaste: Very long with lots of peat smoke that transitions to fruity sweetness.

The new Best Drams have had between 6 and 15 years to develop their exquisite aromas. The single cask bottlings open up exciting perspectives for whisky fans on distilleries from the Isle of Islay, Speyside and the Highlands - in combination with the classic bourbon barrel or aromatic (sweet) wine casks.

At 56.7% vol. Cask Strength, the Strathmill 2009/2022 unfolds celebrated notes from the first fill bourbon barrel with vanilla sugar, tea notes and some coconut.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Vanilla and oatmeal with peach, not quite ripe banana, a hint of coconut as well as shortbread. A fine pineapple note joins in. Despite the fruit, a pleasant dryness.

Palate: Strong start with vanilla sugar and short pastry. Becomes more fruity with peach and a hint of pineapple, which changes to subtle coconut. The banana is now a little riper and sweeter than on the nose.

Aftertaste: Medium long. Initially, the tea notes dominate before the whisky fades out with fruitier notes.

Glen Garioch 2011 Best Dram – 55.3%

The barrique cask in which the Glen Garioch 2011/2022 rested was pre-loaded with the French sweet wine Sauternes. The dark Best Dram from the Highlands combines herbal spice with crumble and baked apple.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Sweet grapes and erica meld with vanilla, spritz, figs and compote of very ripe apples. In the background very fine rosemary and apple pie with crumble.

Palate: Herbaceous and spicy with oak, vanilla sweetness and again spritz biscuits. Gradually becoming fruitier with sweet grapes and baked apple, but without losing the herbal note.

Finish: Herbal-sweet with notes of ripe light grapes as well as baked apple and crumble.
